Abstract
Improvement of the surface of materials to bring about desirable properties may be achieved by laser surface alloying. After a brief review of the mechanisms of formation of surface alloys by the addition of specific elements and laser melting, different examples are reported, namely: Improvement of mechanical surface properties of aluminum base alloys by the electrodeposition of nickel coatings followed by laser treatment. Improvement of the thermal fatigue lifetime of low carbon steels; a nickel coating is first obtained by plasma spraying. Improvement of mechanical properties of iron base alloys by powder injection of tungsten particles.
