Abstract

Off-resonant core excitation is shown to be a highly sensitive spectroscopic method for the investigation of bound Rydberg states. Several applications are discussed, which include the precision measurement of effective quantum numbers without knowledge of the ionization limit and the ``Rydberg filter,'' a laser-based state-selective detection method for highly excited states.
