Abstract

This contribution is heavily influenced by the antecedents to Doppler-free laser spectroscopy reviewed by our introductory speaker, Professor SERIES.[1] In particular, we have considered the effect of optical pumping as introduced by KASTLER [2] on saturation spectroscopy in atomic systems. Several interesting and important effects can occur in this case. Our primary motivation for these studies has been to devise techniques for efficient nuclear orientation as described in a companion paper [3]. Work related to that presented here has been contributed to these proceedings by SERIES and GAWLIK [4] and has also been carried out by PINARD et al.[5]
