Abstract

The trade show, which demonstrates laser devices or products, whether oriented toward research, medical, industrial, high tech or military applications, presents a setting where a laser injury can occur as conference attendees mill around unrestricted spaces. This unique setting is one in which laser safety deficiencies need to be addressed in an immediate fashion. Exhibits or trade shows, sponsoring organizations, or venue management need to ensure no one visiting the show will be inadvertently injured by laser radiation. The primary step is to have a laser safety specialist audit all show displays that contain lasers. The authority of this person needs to be clear and understood by all parties. Any contracts between the venue management and exhibitor should include a statement clearing addressing laser safety and the authority of the show's laser safety officer. An injury will most likely occur to an unsuspecting member of the public, or someone trying to get a better view or understanding of the display product. It is the responsibility of the booth occupants and venue to take steps to prevent such an incident. This chapter reviews the elements that go into such trade shows from set up to when the public is present.
