Abstract
The electron emission properties from activated negative electron affinity GaAs photocathodes have been investigated with respect to focused electron beam applications. We have obtained shot noise limited emission and a long-term drift of less than 0.1% over a 3-h period when the cathode has been operated in a closed-loop configuration. The measured emitted electron energy distribution FWHM is 0.2 eV. The cathode can be operated in either a continuous emission mode or a pulsed mode. When operated in the pulsed mode, stroboscopic images with 100-ps resolution are obtained without beam blanking or electron bunching optics. Using a YAG pumped dye laser, sufficient current is produced in the pulsed mode to allow stroboscopic images to be displayed at TV scan rates.
