Abstract

Laser oscillation was observed on the 2580 Å band system of molecular chlorine. Axial electron beam excitation of a gas mixture containing 2.0 Torr of Cl 2 and 9300 Torr of He yielded 97 mJ of laser energy at 2580 Å in a 70 ns (fwhm) pulse. A laser efficiency of 0.5% and a fluorescence efficiency of 7.2% were determined.
