Abstract

The protection of components via the application of corrosion and/or wear resistant coatings of nanostructure materials has been widely regarded as an effective way to enhance the service life of engineering components. Traditional techniques are employed to fabricate nanostructure coatings include thermal spray, vapor deposition, plating, magnetron sputtering and so on. In recent years, laser-based technologies have been increasingly used as new methods to prepare nanostructure coatings due to their exclusive advantages of high energy density, fast melt and solidification. Based on the research results of our group for many years, this paper systematically reviews our work on the application of laser-based technologies for nanostructure coating production, from the viewpoints of materials, processes, structures, performances and applications. Firstly, the preparation methods for nanostructure coatings are summarized. Secondly, the effect of process parameters on the coating formation and its microstructure is elaborated in detail. Thirdly, the performances of the nanostructure coatings prepared by various methods are evaluated. Finally, the industrial application of nanostructure coatings is introduced, and the future perspectives and challenges facing nanostructure coatings are proposed on the basis of the systematic overview. The protection of components via the application of corrosion and/or wear resistant coatings of nanostructure materials has been widely regarded as an effective way to enhance the service life of engineering components.
