Abstract

Fluorescence series excited in BiS by the argon-ion laser lines 4880, 4889 and 5145 AA have been recorded at moderate resolution and used to derive constants for the ground state X Omega =1/2(2 Pi 12/). Dye-laser absorption experiments have been used to record hyperfine structure in a number of lines of the A1/2-X1/2 system at Doppler-limited resolution. Under these conditions the lines are resolved into ten components in Lande patterns, regular or inverted according to whether the line arises from an e or an f parity level in the lower state. At values of J in the range 40.5 to 75.7 the dominant contribution in the hyperfine structure is the so-called hyperfine doubling.
