Abstract

Irradiation of SF/sub 6/ in a transparent capillary-nozzle supersonic beam source by a low-power cw CO/sub 2/ laser has provided molecular beams with a laser-induced increase in total energy of approx. 0.6 eV molecule/sup -1/ (corresponding to the absorption of approximately five laser photons). Some 80% of this energy increase is retained as internal excitation of SF/sub 6/.
