Abstract

The laser excitation and detection of coherent surface acoustic wave (SAW) pulses or broadband phonons is reviewed. Two contact-free optical detection methods are described, namely monitoring of the transient surface deformation with a Michelson interferometer and probe beam deflection. The sensitivity of the two wideband laser techniques is outlined and their advantages and disadvantages are compared with broadband detection using a piezoelectric foil transducer.
