Abstract

A travelling wave type optical modulator for laser beam was designed and constructed. The basic structure is that of an electrooptic crystal loaded in a microstrip-line for radio frequency (RF) modulation. The design was in view of the characteristic impedance of microstrip line and velocity matching to the light propagating in the electrooptic crystal. Theoretical and experimental investigations showed that 10 GHz bandwidth is attainable in this structure, and the measurement result confirmed the investigation.
