Abstract

The application of lasers in neurosurgery represents one of the most significant technological advances in the development of tools for precise micro-dissection. When combined with the operating microscope and micro-neurosurgical principles, the use of a laser provides controlled dissection of the interface between the lesion and normal nervous tissue without excessive manipulation or retraction of adjacent structures. Such operative precision is particularly useful in pediatric neurosurgery where lesions commonly involve the brain stem, fourth ventricle, optic pathways, suprasellar region, or spinal cord.
