Abstract

Acupuncture channels are entities which have been reported since antiquity. Nevertheless, the demonstration of their existence has become one of the most controversial research topics in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Although the data are not conclusive, there is strong evidence which indicates that cutaneous regions in which the acupuncture channels are located are different from the rest. In these regions, electrical resistance is lower thus permitting the faster propagation of electromagnetic waves. This hypothesis is also supported by different histological (increased collagen density) and biochemical (high concentration of neurotransmitters and vasoactive substances) findings. Overall, the hypothesis of the existence of acupuncture channels has gained weight, but further research is required to characterize in more depth their properties.
