Abstract

Sedimentological and sequence stratigraphic analysis carried out in the Middle Triassic (i.e., Muschelkalk facies) of the central Iberian Chain, resulted in the identification of two depositional sequences, i.e., lower and upper Middle Triassic Sequences. Distribution of systems tracis into each sequence reported in this work, was based on extensive facies analysis. Lateral extension of the lower sequence is restricted to the east, whereas the upper one covers ali the studied area. The LST of the lower Sequence corresponds to the Rot facies and displays maximum thickness in the Montalban area (12 m). The TST and HST correspond to the Lower carbonatic unit and is up to 70 m thick in the Montalban area, reaching only 15 m to the north, iii the Moncayo area. The boundary between both systems tracts has been located at the onset of the more proximal facies progradation from the carbonate ramp. The LST of the upper Sequence corresponds the Middle detritie unit and displays its maximum thickness in the Moncayo area (ca. 50 m), where interbedded evaporitie levels are common. The TST corresponds to the lower part of the Upper carbonatic unit and corresponds to burrowed and high-energy subtidal facies. The HST is shown by the progradation of the tidal and supratidal fiat facies over the subtidal environments, and it corresponds to the upper part of the Upper earbonatic unit.
