Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the specific social needs of the elderly in institutional residential settings. To that end it first describes the current demographic process and its influence on the growth of the population of the very old, who may experience situations of dependence and disability and therefore require social health care of an institutional nature. It then analyses the concept of residential facility and the primary characteristics of this type of facility in Spain. Finally, it presents some of the main findings of the research conducted in 25 public residential facilities operated by the Agencia Madrilena de Atencion Social (Social Care Agency of Madrid), which allow the characteristics of these facilities to be identified and point to the main social needs of the elderly in this specialised social intervention setting.
