Abstract

The purpose of this research is to define in the term “popular proverbs “and their importance in recognizing the culture of other people and identifying the most important methods to translate them added to difficulties faced by the translator when translating the popular proverbs. In our research, we dealt with a group of Iraqi and Arab popular proverbs and compared them with the corresponding of Spanish popular proverbs, trying to identify the methods used to translating it and explaining these proverbs and their advice, judgement and their role in recognize other people’s cultures. Here we ask some important questions, Is the translation of popular proverbs an easy task? and can anyone with good language capabilities translate these proverbs into his own language? O he needs other skills? Certainly, translating proverbs is not easy task and needs the interpreter to be familiar with the social, linguistic, cultural factors and target country’s traditions, so that the trye meaning of these proverbs is not lost when they are translated into the other languages.
