Abstract

The objective of this historical study is to analyze the many economic consequences resulting from the conquest and occupation of Lerida by French troops. Basically, we have used documentary sources preserved in the various archives of the city of Lerida. The text is divided into secondary sections devoted to the contribution side of the Napoleonic War of 1810, supplies in kind and in cash at the Grande Armee, the supply of military hospitals, social control through strong repression and financial difficulties resulting from the elevated French taxation. These were attenuated from 1812 on through the economic recovery project of the new governor of Lerida, Alban de Villeneuve. Demographic and material losses resulting from the invasion, assault and Napoleonic rule conditioned the return of the absolutist Fernando VII and favored the proclamation in 1820 of the liberal system, also conditioned by the legacy of the past, which was none other than ruined municipal finances.
