Abstract

This article explores the relationship among 38 Latinas who participated in the fictive kin system of compadrazgo, or coparenthood. This system encourages the sharing of child-rearing responsibilities among parents and acquired godparents. It is important for social workers to recognize these relationships when they assess all possible elements of support available to Latino families, particularly to the increasing number of female heads of households.
