Abstract

This paper offers a study of the working of non-regular clauses in dactylic hexameter in Silius Italicus’ Punica and makes a comparison between his procedures and the «model poets», mainly Virgil’s. Silius Italicus uses non-regular clauses much less frequently than Virgil, but with similar stylistic values. The most frequent clauses are those we will call si bona norint and armaque nostra , which usually appear related to enjambement. However, Silius Italicus’ main innovation lies in his use of both types of clauses, combined with enjambement and chiasmus.
