Abstract

AbstractInternal and external structures of the head of larvae of Omophron variegatum and O. limbatum were examined and interpreted phylogenetically. Omophronini are characterized by many internal and external autapomorphic features. Omophronini belong to a monophyletic unit within Carabidae which does not include Trachypachini, Gehringiini, Metriinae, and Paussinae (Anisochaeta sensu Jeannel 1941-42). A sistergroup relationship between Omophronini and the remaining taxa of this monophyletic unit is suggested by two synapomorphic character states of the latter group. One common derived character state suggests a sistergroup relationship between Omophronini and Opisthiini. Three apomorphic character states may indicate the monophyly of a large group within Carabidae which includes Scaritini and the following tribes and subfamilies in Lindroth's classification (Caraboidea Limbata sensu Jeannel 1941-42).
