In providing the first taxonomic descriptions of the larvae of an Anomalochrysa species, we noted that Anomalochrysa frater Perkins exhibits some traits previously unreported for the genus : Each of the three instars has well-developed lateral tubercles on the thoracic segments and abdominal segments II through VII ; thoracic and abdominal setae are numerous, well developed, and most are blunt or knobbed ; and all three instars vary greatly in thoracic and abdominal markings. In addition, A. frater shares several distinctive biological features with its congener A. maclachlani Blackburn : both species develop well under low temperatures (i.e., 25°C. ; and courtship involves dorsoanteriorly directed flicks of the wings by both males and females
