Larsen-Johansson disease of the patella; seven new case records; its relationship to other forms of osteochondritis; use of male sex hormones as a new form of treatment.

Abstract

1. A historical and general account on Larsen-Johansson disease of the patella is given, with particular emphasis on its ætiology. 2. Its similarity to Osgood-Schlatter disease is stressed. 3. The main ætiological factors are believed to be: endocrine disturbances, usually combined with repeated light trauma or strain, and a familial tendency. 4. The incidence of Larsen's disease is much higher than is customarily believed, probably between 2–5 per cent. 5. Seven new cases are reported: four boys and three girls, between the ages of 10–14, in one of which Schlatter's disease was also present. In five the condition was bilateral, in two, unilateral. 6. The use of male sex hormone (Testosterone), combined with immobilisation and rest, is recommended as a valuable aid in the more severe cases of Larsen's and Schlatter's diseases, as well as in other forms of osteochondritis, with endocrinal disturbances as their basis. The need for intensive research on a large scale with regard to endocrine therapy is advocated.
