Abstract

The occurrence of very large normal secondary intermolecular kinetic isotope effects in non-thermally activate unimolecular systems for an energization technique other than chemical activation is pointed out. Photosensitization Hg(/sup 3/P/sub 1/) experiments were performed on ethylene molecules. The relative split off rates from sym-C/sub 2/H/sub 2/D/sub 2/, given as the secondary effect is given. It is known that split off occurs readily by Hg(3Pt) sensitization (ll2 kcal/mole). Thus for mercury photosensitization epsilon /sup +/ have some value up to l9 kcal/mole, and is probably not close to zero. It is felt that the magnitudes found are quite reasonable. (P.C.H.)
