Abstract

ABSTRACT Recently, population growth and more need for transportation have significantly increased the number of scrap tyres all over the world. Environmental pollution and endangered human health are serious consequences of discarded scrap tyres in nature. Scrap tyres can be effectively used in civil and geotechnical activities. In this paper, the performance of strip of scrap tyre with oblique transverse member evaluates as reinforcement elements in Mechanically Stabilised Earth Walls (MSEWs) by large-scale pullout tests (i.e. 1.4 m × 0.8 m × 0.8 m). The experimental pullout results of Geo Scrap Tyre (GST) reinforcement compared with theoretical suggested equations and ordinary reinforcement of Geosynthetic Strip (GS), Steel Strip (ST), and Steel Strip with Rib (STR). The results of universal tensile and pullout tests have shown high tensile strength and a significant interaction of scrap tyres. The Geo Scrap Tyre reinforcement with three Oblique transverse members (GSTO3) was capable of increasing pullout resistance by more than 6.9, 3.8, and 5.8 times compared to ST, GS, and STR. Therefore, the present study makes several noteworthy contributions to using GST reinforcement in solving discarded scrap tyres. Additionally, this research extends geotechnical engineers ̕ knowledge of economical systems of reinforced soil walls.
