Abstract
Almost all the conventional linear generators uses neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets (PMs) to generate magnetic field where neodymium is one of the rare earth elements (REEs). In this paper, a new alternative rare earth free (REF) PM is proposed to be used in the construction of a linear generator for wave energy extraction. The REF PM is a compound of iron nitride which is symbolized as Fe 16 N 2 . It is capable to produce strong magnetic field and has large magnetic remanence property. A linear generator is designed and simulated to compare the results for using both Fe 16 N 2 compound and the conventional PM. The construction of the proposed linear generator, generated voltage, power output, armature current, and magnetic properties are shown in detail. Simulation results of the proposed linear generator are obtained by finite element analysis. ANSYS/Maxwell software is used to find excellent performances of the proposed linear generator.
