Abstract

Using the Olympus GFB fibergastroscope, 284 biopsy specimens were obtained under direct vision from 129 patients. The biopsy site was recorded according to 24 endoscopically recognizable areas. Topographic plotting shows that pyloric gland mucosa occupies most of the distal two-thirds of the antrum and extends proximal to the gastroscopic angulus along the lesser curvature in one-third of instances. With significant frequency, in a given patient, gastritis occurred in one segment but not in another. The pyloric gland area was more apt to be inflamed.
