Abstract

This paper presents the experimental and numerical investigations of permanent large deformations on 4mm thick Mild Steel (MS) plate due to impact-perforation of rigid spherical projectile. These investigations are made for an impact velocity range of 448 -100 m/s. AUTODYN software is used in carrying out the numerical studies. It is observed that the permanent large deformations are found to be maximum at ballistic limit condition. Correspondingly, the maximum plate bending radius is also maximum at this condition. Thereafter, both the above described phenomena are reducing with increase in impact velocity. These observations have been made from both experimental and numerical studies.
