Abstract

The pumping unit described was governed in design by its long and arduous duty, and is not of a general competitive type. On account of the high pressure the design incorporated three-throw reciprocating pumps; and because of local power conditions electrically driven pumps were chosen, in preference to steam-hydraulic intensifiers that have hitherto held the field in heavy forging plant. Detailed information regarding the mechanical features of the pump, such as cranks, rams, pumps, and valves, is given with special notes on tests of materials, efficiency, flywheel speed regulation, and flexible couplings. A complete cross-section of the pump is given, together with a photograph of the pump completely equipped. A diagram of the control gears indicates the simplicity of operation which is reflected in the performance data made availabe with regard to power and maintenance. Details of the forging work carried out under different sizes of presses having the same control are also included. In an addendum some outstanding particulars are given of pumps applied to plate-bending presses, involving the use of torque converters to obtain fully controlled pressures.
