Abstract

We present a new method to realize large bandwidth opticallimiting using Kerr nonlinearity doped one-dimensional coupledcavity optical waveguides (CCOWs). When the incident intensity isweak, the structure is a perfect CCOW that supports a hightransmission band. When the intensity is increased, the Kerreffects change the refractive index of the Kerr cavity whichresults in a large decrease of transmission coefficients in thewhole band. We numerically analyse the limiter using the nonlineartransfer matrix method and nonlinear finite difference in timedomain method. Optical limiting effects are observed inthe whole transmission band, and optimization methods are alsodiscussed.
