Abstract

Bolometers with receiving areas of the order of 1 cm2 have been made by evaporating gold on to pellicles of aluminium oxide. Maximum uniformity of the responsivity over the receiving area has been obtained by operating at atmospheric pressure, with a metal heat sink mounted closely behind the pellicle. The responsivity at any point on the receiver further than 0.5 mm from the edge then exceeds 0.9 of the value at the centre. The best values for the thermal time constant (15 msec) and the minimum detectable power (2.5 nw for a bolometer of area 80 mm2 and an amplifier bandwidth 1 c/s) occur at air pressures 3-100 torr.
