Abstract

Objective To present the results using laparoscopic modified Thal fundoplication to treat hiatal hernia in children. Methods Between June of 2007 and June of 2009, 18 patients with hiatal hernia were performed laparoscopic modified Thal fundoplication at this center, and their clinical data were retrospectively reviewed in this study. The patients aged from 3 months to 8 year old, and included 12 males and 6 females. The diagnosis was made based on the upper gastrointestinal tract barium examination before surgery. Results All patients underwent laparoscopic modified Thal fundoplication. Intraoperative bleeding was few. No esophageal injury occurred. Patients stomachs and esophagus were restored to the normal position after surgery. No complication was noted except 1 patient had mild gastroesophageal reflux during follow-up. Conclusions Laparoscopic modified Thal fundoplication is effective for the treatment of hiatal hernia in children. Key words: Hiatal hernia; Laparoscopic surgical procedures; Gastroesophageal reflux
