Abstract

Objective: a review of the literature on the laparoscopic Burch colposuspension procedure, its technical aspects and its results.Data sources: Medline search using key words: laparoscopy, Burch colposuspension, urethropexy, bladder neck suspension and urinary stress incontinence.Study selection: nine retrospective and six prospective laparoscopic Burch studies with substantial patient numbers were identified. Two cost-analysis studies were reviewed. Only two prospective randomized studies were found on the subject; one compared laparoscopy to the traditional approach, the other compared two laparoscopic techniques. Conclusions: in the hands of experienced endoscopists, the laparoscopic Burch procedure appears safe and effective and may allow for quicker patient recovery. The long-term cure rates and cost-effectiveness need to be evaluated further.
