Abstract
The aim is to understand what motivates the choice of echar or tirar to express the notion of throwing. The literature highlights what they have in common rather than what distinguishes them. The hypothesis, however, is that since their framing differs they cannot be synonymous. The analysis tracks the conceptual differences in the preferred lexical associations in the trivalent constructions, as well as in the other constructions avai- lable for each verb. Beyond the variability of the components of the transfer event, each verb conveys its own construal, echar yielding an associative view, tirar a ballistic one. The difference in relational profile is further corroborated in the respective met- onymic and metaphoric extensions. The prototypical kinetic configuration is summarized in a final typological sketch.
