Abstract

Simple algebraic formulae are derived for the energy levels in a cubic crystalline field of the ground states J = 7/2, 4, 9/2, 6 and 8 of the lanthanide ions. Starting from the few ions in gold metal for which experimental information is available, these are used to predict the ground states of other lanthanide ions. The hyperfine interactions of the various ions are discussed, together with possible experiments involving magnetic and acoustic resonance, and some applications to cryogenics.
