Language use as a manifestation of leadership anxiety dynamics : a conceptual analysis and systems psychodynamic model

Highlights

  • Postmodern organisations are aptly referred to as anxiety machines (Daskal 2017:65; Hader 2017:10), eliciting what is known as primitive anxieties (Petriglieri 2020:3)

  • The systems psychodynamic approach provided the researcher with a lens to explore leadership anxiety dynamics as these are reflected in language use ‘below the surface’ (Brunning & Perini 2010:77; Long 2018:102)

  • Its purpose is to explore the nature of the interaction between anxiety in leadership and leaders’ language use, as well as to serve as a guide in raising awareness, identifying and exploring leadership anxiety dynamics as these are manifested in the language use of the leader

Summary

Introduction

Postmodern organisations are aptly referred to as anxiety machines (Daskal 2017:65; Hader 2017:10), eliciting what is known as primitive anxieties (Petriglieri 2020:3). In the postmodern world of work leaders are experiencing high levels of anxiety, creating the perception of leaders being under attack. The literature alludes to the assumption that there is a connection between anxiety and language use, i.e. a particular, inimitable way of communication (Buchholz & Kächele 2013:25). It defines the nature of that which is referred to, gives meaning to human interactions and actively gives shape to the world (Holtgraves & Kashima 2008:98; Souba 2009:62)
