Abstract
The article is dedicated to the Ukrainian educator and master of translation Ivan Babych. The basic milestones of his linguistic personality formation are outlined and the extralinguistic factors of influence upon such formation are revealed.Considering the biography of I. Babych and analyzing his heritage in the field of translation, we should admit that he was a person of European culture, who shared its fundamental values in Ukraine. At the same time Ivan Babych promoted the Ukrainian culture as well as the language of the country in the French-speaking part of the world. It is from the standpoint of a specific function of intercultural personality that one should consider his linguistic personality and achievements in the sphere of literature.It is postulated that, being a Ukrainian translator of French descent Ivan Babych contributed to the rapprochement of European peoples and cultures via his fruitful literature activity. From such point of view, we refer him to a cohort of the famous representatives of the Ukrainian Literary Translation School.
