Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine language abilities of school-aged children with multi-cultural background via Language Scale for School-aged Children (LSSC). The participants were a total of 45 school-age children: 15 children with multi-cultural backgrounds, 15 age-matched and 15 language-matched children from non-multicultural families. Language abilities of participants were measured using the LSSC, which was standardized test for assessing languages of school-aged children. The results were as follows; (1) There were significant difference in the total/receptive/expressive language score. (2) According to the language area, significant difference revealed in part of the semantics tests and all the syntax tests between children with multi- cultural backgrounds and age-matched peers. The results help to understand the overall language characteristics of school-aged children with multicultural backgrounds.
