Abstract
Letters of recommendation (LOR) play an integral role throughout the professional application process, often revealing personal and subjective qualities of an applicant that may otherwise be difficult to discern, with endorsements from mentors and respected leaders adding further credibility to an applicant's candidacy. In fact, previous studies have found that LORs tend to be one of the most, if not the most, important factors in selecting applicants for interviews.1,2 Given the importance of LORs in individuals’ applications within the medical field, bringing awareness to LOR writers regarding potential gender biases is an important step towards decreasing said bias.
