Abstract

This chapter describes important elements of building and implementing challenging language arts curriculum for advanced learners. The chapter addresses current trends in language arts education and related implications for supporting students who need advanced learning experiences to meet their needs. The importance of selecting high-quality, challenging, relevant literature is explored as foundational to curriculum for advanced learners in language arts, along with instructional approaches for guiding students in constructing meaning based on the literature they read. The chapter demonstrates the use of the Integrated Curriculum Model (ICM) as a framework for advanced language arts curriculum, outlining the use of a central concept, engagement with higher-order reasoning, and emphasis on advanced content learning across reading, writing, language study, and oral communication skills. Examples from research-based ICM language arts curriculum are used to illustrate key ideas.
