Abstract

Abstract Language and social interaction (LSI) is both a subject matter within the field of communication and a multidisciplinary confederation of scholarly communities. LSI research is primarily concerned with the ways in which people use language and other practical communicative resources to construct and navigate their social and cultural worlds. LSI scholars share an interest in both “everyday” and institutional interaction, and in the last 30 years the latter has included increased emphasis on health settings. This entry includes an overview of some shared theoretical and methodological premises in LSI research, as well as a closer look at several LSI subdisciplines (conversation analysis; ethnography of communication; discourse analysis) and their contributions in health communication.
