Abstract

Langerhans cells are antigen-presenting dendritic cells (DCs) that reside in epithelia.Under an electron microscope,Birbeck granules are a characteristic organelle of Langerhans cells, and the Ctype lectin receptor langerin (CD207) is their phenotypic hallmark. In addition to Langerhans cells, dermal DCs and other tissue cells also express Langerin.Recent studies have revealed that Langerin can reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, fight against fungal infection, regulate contact hypersensitivity, and improve vaccine efficacy. Also,Langerin has been applied in the diagnosis of Langerhans cell-related diseases. The authors briefly review progress in research on Langerin structure, function and clinical application,in hope to provide new clues to the prevention and treatment of related skin diseases. Key words: Langerhans cells; Lectins,C-type; Langerin/CD207
