Abstract

In order to approach the spatiotemporal variation of non-point source pollution in Taihu Lake watershed, ten typical channels connected with Taihu Lake were selected in Yixing city. For these channels, “source–sink” landscape contrast index was calculated based on source–sink landscape theory in terms of some key factors concerned with the landscape contrast index such as distance, elevation, and slope, in addition to water sample collection and water quality analysis. The results showed that on the temporal dimension, source landscape increased significantly in Taihu Lake watershed while “source–sink” landscape contrast index decreased significantly during the term. On the spatial dimension, the smaller the landscape contrast index, the better the “sink” landscape interception to the non-point source pollution, and the higher the water quality, too. Thus, this study indicated that water quality has been improved since conducting shelter belts building around Taihu Lake, and they will intercept much more of the non-point source pollution with these trees growing.
