Abstract

The purpose of this research was the discovery of the ideal landscape (canonical landscape) of the traditional livestock raisers of the uplands north of Madrid. This particular group of people plays an important role in shaping the landscape of this mountainous area. A method based on data processing of comparisons of range land photographs was employed, and the emerging ideal picture of the optimum landscape contains both physical (topographical structure) and management (stone and scrub removal; tree density, shape and location; grass height, color and texture; etc.) aspects. In addition to the main consensual landscape model, conflicts opposing different management criteria resulted in some landscape preference variance. The main variation trend opposes “quality” and “quantity”, and corresponds to a gradient in adherence to traditional rules. The predominant model of landscape preference corresponds to a strategy of self-sufficiency and balanced management in a severe, unpredictable environment. This traditional approach has been challenged by the modern trend towards intensive agriculture resulting in a very different landscape.
