Abstract

Abstract For nearly two hundred years the evolution of stage scenery, as well as the development of theatre buildings, was in the hands of architects, many of whom also designed gardens. Their scene designs, as also the later works of specialist designers and painters, contain much of interest for architectural and landscape historians. The author offers an historical outline of the representation of place by means of stage illusion.
