Abstract
A Russian geographer investigates the effects of oil and gas exploration activity on the taiga environment at two locations in Irkutsk Oblast of East Siberia—the Kovyktinskoye and the Upper Chona oil and gas condensate deposits. Particular attention is devoted to changes in water chemistry resulting from the use of saline solutions at drilling sites, human‐induced changes in water and soil pH, and above‐background accumulations of metals and other chemical elements in vegetation and soils. A concluding section presents recommendations for the regulation and monitoring of mineral development activities in taiga environments.
