Abstract

Like root bridges, landscapes are continual works in progress, subject to change and growth. Landscape architecture is capable of being one of the socially constructed living bridges between the challenges of today and the solutions of tomorrow. Landscape architects contend with real sites, real communities and real limitations and challenges in their projects. Research has the capacity to support their decision making and provide the needed evidence to policy makers and clients. The philosophical underpinnings of landscape architecture are not very different today from their earliest expression. Both the discipline and the profession are conscientious in their advocacy of social interests, inclusion, participation and in the role of landscape architects as environmentalists and stewards of landscape ecologies and natural heritage. Overall, landscape architecture is uniquely placed to provide bridges across many of the challenges facing urban landscapes by insisting on the value of good environmental management, respect for environmental heritage and through the design of inviting green spaces in cities.
