Abstract

Over 15 years ago the first photographs of the earth from space were taken with a hand-held camera on the MERCURY 8 mission. LANDSAT 1, the first spacecraft designed specifically for earth observations, was launched on July 23, 1972. Presently LANDSATs 2 and 3 are in operation. LANDSAT D is scheduled for 1981 to possibly form part of an operational earth observation system. In addition to the LANDSAT program, SEASAT A transmits high-resolution radar imagery. Large format cartographic cameras will be carried in the SPACE SHUTTLE and European Spacelab.
