Abstract

To improve culture yield and economic benefits, aquaculture industry around the world has shown a tendency of intensification in recent years, i.e., increasing the proportion of fed species production, the adoption of intensive aquaculture systems (cage, pen, raceway, indoor facilities), and application of aerators. With the intensification of pond farming, increased freshwater consumption and pollutant discharge have affected the sustainable development of pond farming. Therefore, some land-based intensive aquaculture models have been adopted to solve these problems. This chapter will introduce the principles of land-based intensive aquaculture systems, such as recirculating aquaculture systems, solar recirculating aquaculture systems, raceway aquaculture systems, and biofloc-based aquaculture systems.
