Abstract

Abstract Using official and other statistics, an attempt is made to specify the main changes in land use which occurred in the Highlands and Islands between 1946 and 1975. Although some of the major features of land‐use change, such as extensive afforestation, can be readily identified, it is concluded that these statistics fail to give a clear and accurate overall picture of the structure of land use in the area.
