Abstract

Migration has been part of life for most Americans. But their experience differed tremendously from one another.Many Europeans migrated to north America to realize their dream because of its wilderness. From the colonial period, immigrants from England set up the protestant modes of culture. After the Enlightenment, the United States became not only land of Canaan, but with freedom and equality.For immigrants who arrived at America after mid-19th century, including Asians and South America, the United States was also a land of dream. However, because of historical cultural background, they experienced serious discrimination. While expecting some economic reward, they regarded the US as ”Gold Mountain” or ”Money of Tree”. Until the late 20th century, never did they enjoy freedom and democracy which the United States valued most.
